Kenneth D. Lee papers, 1942-1968, bulk 1942-1945.

This collection contains approximately 300 letters written by Kenneth and Evelyne Lee. His letters discuss camp life and assignments and hers provide updates on family and household affairs. Accompanying the letters are miscellaneous military documents and communications, several photographs, a partial transcription of the correspondence, family history materials, and a 1944 audio interview of Major Lee by his son, Dennis, in which Kenneth provides accounts of an automobile trip he took in 1926 from Iowa to Colorado, his wartime service and his experiences as a commercial truck driver.

Kenneth Lee served with the 1325th Service Command Unit of the U.S. Army Transportation Corps during World War II. He received his basic training at Camp Kohler in Sacramento, California; attended Signal Corps radio school in Tyler, Texas; and completed Officer Candidate School at Mississippi State College. He served as a port battalion instructor at Fort Indiantown Gap (Pennsylvania) before being deployed to Iran in January, 1945 for hauling Lend-Lease supplies to the Soviet Union. After the wa...

The USS St. Mihiel was built by the American International Shipbuilding Corp. on Hogs Island, Pennsylvania in 1920. She was used as an army transport, carrying soldiers to and from battle. In 1923, she carried the last American soldiers back from Germany at the end of World War I. In 1943, the USS St. Mihiel was decommissioned to the Navy, where she served as an army hospital ship.
